Public Speaking has changed

Speaking in front of people is hard.

The National Social Anxiety Center says:

“The fear of public speaking is the most common phobia ahead of death, spiders, or heights.”

What about Public Speaking on virtual platforms?

In 2020, speaking in front of others transformed into an entirely different monster.

We had to speak in front of others while…

  • Looking at ourselves in a mirror
  • Advancing slides
  • Reading chats
  • Managing mute/unmute
  • Ignoring the kid, dog, grandma, fire alarm, dryer, etc.
  • Remembering not to pick our nose and wear pants.

The world has changed. Rather than going back to the old ways of meeting in person, we have adapted our work to digital platforms. We had to overcome our stage fright. What’s more stage-like than a rectangular box around your face and upper body?!

As an actor with over 15+ years of experience, I spend a lot of time observing people. Your facial expressions, body language, vocal delivery and much more. Observation and deep analysis of the human condition comes naturally to me. No, its not creepy…its research.

I believe the Zoom Boom created two reactions to speaking on zoom:

Person A – “Speaking in front of others virtually is A LOT EASIER than In-Person, it feels like the people aren’t even there.”

Person B: “Speaking in front of others virtually is WAY HARDER that In-Person, it feels like the people aren’t even there!!!!!!!”

It is all about the way you look at it. What is the point of holding a meeting or presenting material if THE PEOPLE AREN’T EVEN THERE?

Obviously, the people are there, but it doesn’t FEEL like it, and when you are IN PERSON and the people ARE there, right in front of you – with their resting *listening* face, making your armpit stains reach your hips, how does this change how we feel?!

As an Acting Coach, I help people figure out how to navigate all sorts of speaking environments and audiences. If you “don’t like public speaking” like most of the world, this is your time to shine as an ACTOR and pretend you know what you are doing!

Yes, You can read all the articles you want, scroll the social media influncer pep talks, and watch all the fanciest youtube videos out there…but what you truly need is a personal connection.

Someone to meet with you face to face (virtual or in-person), listen to your story, your thoughts, fears, hopes and dreams for speaking in front of others. Someone to tell you how awesome you are and give you the best tips to make your public speaking experience amazing (or at least more tolerable)!

That person is ME! I work with people all over the world.
